Food Storage & Shelf Life Guides

Not sure if those leftovers are still good? These guides explain how long everyday foods last in the fridge, freezer and pantry – and exactly how to store, freeze and thaw them so less food ends up in the bin.

Each guide starts with a quick answer, then gives you a storage chart, step-by-step methods, the signs of spoilage to watch for and the mistakes to avoid. Storage times follow guidance from the USDA, FoodSafety.gov and other official food-safety agencies.

The 4 golden rules of food storage

2 hrs

Refrigerate cooked food within 2 hours – or 1 hour if it's above 90°F (32°C).

40°F

Keep your fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below. A cheap fridge thermometer helps.

0°F

Keep your freezer at 0°F (-18°C). Frozen food stays safe; quality fades over time.

Label

Write the date on every container and bag. When in doubt, throw it out.
